Summary

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) plans care for patients in accordance with approved nurse midwifery protocol in collaboration with the health care team and under the direction of clinic physicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Obtains health history and performs in-office physical examinations as well as hospital consults.
Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests and interprets results.
Formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care plans.
Assesses patient for change in status and institutes appropriate interventions.
Manages normal labor and conducts delivery, including assessment of maternal and fetal status.
Identifies deviations from normal labor and delivery and notifies the appropriate physician(s).
Manages post-delivery stage, including episiotomy and perineal repairs as necessitated.
Explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedures, home care and
health maintenance to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners as appropriate.
Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems.
Makes rounds, assesses patient well-being and completes progress notes, orders, discharge
summaries and care plans.
Documents all patient information and care provided, patient/family responses and medication
dispensed or prescribed in electronic medical record (EMR).
Obtains new patient records, previous test results and other records required.
Participates in cost containment and quality improvement activities.

Other

Participates in educational activities.
Follows organizational policies and procedures, including State of Franklin Healthcare Associates
Compliance Manual, Code of Ethics and Business Standards, HR Policies and Procedures Manual,
Team Member Handbook, OSHA Manual and any other policies or procedures for the job function,
department, location or clinic.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Masters of Science in Nursing

Experience

Three or more years of experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife (preferred).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certification as a Nurse Midwife with licensure to work in the State of Tennessee

Valid DEA licensure

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a medical office environment involving contact with patients, physicians, staff, insurance carriers and other business partners. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Travel between work sites and additional hours, including evening and weekend work is necessary.
