Title: Respiratory Therapist, Limited License
Department: Respiratory Therapy

Shift: As needed and as available, working 12-hour shifts including night, weekend and holiday shifts.

Position Summary:
The position is responsible for providing various forms of respiratory therapy, up to and including, the level for which they have successfully completed the corresponding academic curriculum of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved Respiratory Program and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Respiratory Care Department.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Administers oxygen and air-oxygen mixtures using various equipment.
2. Administers high-humidity aerosols and gas mixtures using pneumatic and electronic nebulizers and aerosolized medications
3. Instructs patients in the use of incentive spirometers. Obtains arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis. Administers aerosolized medications and airway clearance therapies. May induce sputum per department policy.
4. Administers emergency respiratory care such as, but not limited to, CPR and ventilation with resuscitators and masks.
5. Monitors patients physiological responses to therapy (such as vital signs, work of breathing and lung sounds.
6. Administers emergency respiratory care such as, but not limited to, CPR and ventilation with resuscitators and masks.
7. Performs simple measurements of lung volumes, flows, and pressures using spirometers, manometers, and gauges.
8. Prepares, operates, maintains, and monitors various ventilators and other respiratory care devices under the direction of a manager and/or licensed respiratory therapist.
9. Inspects, tests, cleans, and maintains various types of respiratory therapy equipment as per department policy.
10. Maintains equipment in good working order and makes minor repairs as necessary.
11. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to management and/or registered respiratory therapist.
12. Performs various clerical duties such as, but not limited to, billing and maintaining records and files of patient services. Inventories respiratory therapy supplies and equipment as directed. Assists with ordering and stocking of supplies as needed.
13. Sets up and operates devices such as basic oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilators, CPAP/Bi-level support, NIPPV, high flow oxygen therapy under the direction of a manager and/or licensed respiratory therapist and in accordance with department policy and procedures.
14. Provides verbal reports including diagnosis, significant past medical history, reason(s) for admission, treatment goals and plans, patients response to treatment, and suggestions to optimize patients treatment plan
15. Reviews patients electronic medical record for appropriate history, reason for admission, pertinent laboratory results, current orders
16. Other duties as assigned

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Verification of education and competency upon completion of one (1) year of an Associate of Science in a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved Respiratory Care program
2. Holds a current Limited License in Respiratory Care from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Respiratory Care
3. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Provide emergency care including assisting with intubation, Rapid Response Team, High Risk Delivery and Code Team.
Inspect, test, clean and maintain respiratory therapy equipment as per department policy.
Demonstrate and instruct respiratory care procedures to new staff, other healthcare personnel, patients, and patients families.
Set up and operate devices such as basic oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilators, CPAP/Bi-level support, NIPPV, high flow oxygen therapy in accordance with department policy and procedures.
Provides verbal report including diagnosis, significant past medical history, reason(s) for admission, treatment goals and plans, patients response to treatment, and suggestions to optimize patients treatment plan.
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

The UMass Memorial Health Care Community

UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) is a 779-bed facility on two acute care campuses (University and Memorial), and an ambulatory care campus (Hahnemann), all located within a few miles of each other in Worcester. UMMMC is the region's only designated Level I trauma center, and the University Campus is home to LifeFlight, New England's first hospital-based air ambulance.
