Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Central Sterile Processing Department, supervises shift activities of the sterile processing staff. Facilitates order and receipt of instrumentation, equipment, and specific supplies utilized in operating rooms. Supervises staff performing instrument sterilization and case cart preparation. Functions as a direct liaison with the Perioperative Services Managers to respond to emergent needs for equipment and supplies, as well as resolution of concerns regarding reprocessing activities, including quality of service and instrument availability. Ensures quick and timely resolution of related issues by providing direction to and communicating with reprocessing staff. Participates with CSPD Manager in development of new or revised policies and procedures, and adheres to TJC, AORN and AAMI guidelines. Ensures staff meets or exceeds customer expectations through continued quality monitoring and coaching for improvements. Functions as primary resource to nursing managers for all sterile processing activities to enhance customer service by addressing and resolving operational concerns. Collaborates with operating room staff to ensure a smooth start to the operative schedule for the following job functions.

Job Functions:
1. Functions as primary resource to nurse managers for all sterile processing activities to enhance customer service by addressing and resolving operational concerns. Collaborates with operating room staff to ensure a smooth start to the operative schedule.
2. Confirming with nurse managers and sterile processing staff that all required supplies and instrumentation as required for schedule procedures are available
3. Responding to calls for additional instrumentation, including emergent needs for same; resolves issues of missing items as necessary
4. Facilitating resolution of unplanned instrument requests which may require reassigning work of sterile processing staff to meet emergent needs or notifying sales representative as needed
5. Auditing and resolving case cart issues to ensure accuracy and completeness
6. Addresses instrumentation needs of perioperative team, including new surgeons.
7. Receives nurse manager and surgeon requests for instrument tray modification, ensuring that such changes are in compliance with established tray development guidelines.
8. Ensures instruments are cleaned, assembled, sterilized, stored and distributed according to departmental policies and procedures and that all activities are in compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
9. Ensures that supplies are picked accurately for case carts to support inpatient and outpatient surgery.
10. In coordination with nurse managers, updates procedure-specific pick lists used to prepare case carts for scheduled surgical procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required

Experience:
o Three years progressively more responsible related experience in operating room setting or similar position to include practical experience in aseptic techniques, surgical instrumentation, surgical procedures and materials management.
o Experience should demonstrate effective leadership/management and high level of organizational and communication skills, as well as effective management of competing priorities.
o Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of decontamination and sterilization methods, surgical instrumentation and surgical case cart management, and be able to perform reprocessing technician responsibilities in a critical situation.

Licensure and/or Certification:
Sterile Processing Technician Certificate CBSPD / CRCST required

Job Summary
Reporting to the Supervisor of Sterile Processing, the Technician I is responsible for following departmental rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures, for all work practices including cleaning, assembling, sterilizing surgical instrumentation and supplies.
Job Functions
1. Decontaminates instruments and equipment using thorough cleaning and disinfecting practices as they are returned to Sterile Processing.
2. Consistently performs sterilization functions in a manner that provides sterile, complete and patient ready sets for various departments.
3. Follows hospital and departmental procedures for cleaning, assembly and sterilizing instrumentation.
4. Maintains accurate sterilization procedure records, checks recorder charts for proper functioning of sterilizer temperatures and pressures, and reports all malfunctions to Supervisor.
5. Communicates by telephone, in a manner that maintains good relationships with other areas of the hospital.
6. Performs housekeeping duties in the department, cleans equipment according to manufacturer recommended schedules, and maintains all areas of department in a sanitary and organized condition.
7. Responds to changes in work schedule as necessary, uses time to departmental advantage.
8. Develops through knowledge of all equipment in the department and operates same in safe manner.
9. Checks assigned area of responsibility and checks for outdated supplies, torn wrappers, adequate supply levels, and proper rotation and location and reports discrepancies to Supervisor. Reprocesses all compromised items immediately.
10. Identifies basic instruments and assemblies and wraps basic trays used in operating room as well as other areas according to departmental policy and procedures.
11. Performs sterilization processes, both steam and ETO, according to manufacturer and department procedure.
12. Cleans, disinfects equipment transport carts.
13. Examines linen before use, follows departmental procedures for towel pack preparation and sterilization.
14. Maintains supply and instrument storage areas in a clean and orderly condition, reports supply shortages to supervisor, checks package integrity, and reprocesses those items that have been compromised.
15. Processes instrumentation according to operating room schedule to provide clean and/or sterile equipment for pending cases.
16. Maintains and supports patients rights to care, privacy and respect.
17. Other duties as assigned from time to time.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
o High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
o Completion of a sterile processing course preferred.
Experience
o One to three years sterile processing/operating room experience strongly preferred.
Licensure and/or Certification
o Certification strongly preferred
Skills
o Excellent customer service skills.
o Demonstrated ability to work in groups.
o Attention to detail; proven ability to follow instructions.
o Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
o Computer skills required.
o Ability to maintain confidential information.
