About the Organization

START (formerly the Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation or ARTC) began treating patients in a single building at 937 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and is now one of New York State's largest non-hospital providers of health and human services. For more than 40 years, START has offered treatment to over 40,000 self-referred patients throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Bronx.

Today, we continue to offer holistic care when treating those with an opioid addiction and co-occurring mental illness to transition our patients toward healthy and productive lives. In 1985, START added primary medical care including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C services and, in 2011, was contracted by the state to provide mental health care for juveniles in two detention facilities.

Our seven community-based treatment programs use individual and group counseling with medical and behavioral health professionals to treat patients, and some clinics offer short-term, outpatient detoxification and a drug-free chemical dependency program for other non-opiate addictions.

Since the 1970s, our doctors and patients have participated in a wide range of behavioral and biomedical studies focusing on substance use and its complications including HIV-related research beginning in the late 1980s. Our research has been funded by: the National Institute on Drug Abuse; the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Bristol-Myers Squibb; GlaxoSmithKline; Abbott Labs; Pfizer Inc.; Ortho Biotech Products, L.P.; and OraSure Technologies, Inc. START continues to share the results of its research through scientific presentations throughout the nation and the world and via articles in renowned scientific journals.

START Treatment & Recovery Centers is a nonprofit organization certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS); licensed as an Article 28 Diagnostic and Treatment Center by the New York State Office of Health Systems Management; and is one of the nation's top 3%, evidence-based healthcare providers accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
