Job Description

DMC Children s Hospital of Michigan and University Pediatricians are actively seeking an additional Pediatric Hematologist with expertise and/or experience in Sickle Cell. This is a full-time, employed opportunity located in Detroit, Michigan.

- Outpatient clinics involves both a morning and afternoon session minimum 2 full day clinics per week

- Inpatient attending and consult service are done in 2-week blocks at a time typically, physicians cover 5-6 two-week blocks during the year

- On call weekend coverage is approximately 7-8 times per month including one holiday weekend per year

- Teaching of medical students, Pediatric residents, and fellows is required

- Research opportunities available

About the Division:
The overall Hematology-Oncology Division is comprised of 16 physician faculty members, 6 fellows, 7 nurse practitioners, 22 registered nurses, 2 hematology/oncology pharmacists, and a large clinical and research support staff.
Additionally, 2 General Pediatricians, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 2 Nurses are all dedicated specifically to the general care of sickle cell patients in an outpatient clinic. We have 5 nurses that mange transfusion clinic for patients receiving chronic transfusions. The Division also has five experienced CRAs in the hematology research office that is shared between sickle cell and hemophilia research.
The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic serves one of the largest concentrated populations of patients with sickle cell disease in the nation. Currently, 700 sickle cell patients and 400 bleeding disorder patients are under our care. We are also involved to varying degrees in the care of 1,300 additional adult patients and are the leader in the city-wide efforts between multiple health systems to better care for adults with the disease.
Our program is currently a site for over 10 pharma-initiated clinical trails and are regularly a preferred site due to our large patient population and experience in these trails. The division works very closely on a clinical and academic basis with a growing commercial lab nearby specializing in novel assays of red blood cell and vascular adhesion as well as overall RBC health. These features in our center place us as the forefront of sickle cell disease research and provide excellent opportunities for novel research and academic advancement.
The hospital is a member of the Children s Oncology Group and is also a collaborating site for the St. Jude Children s Research Hospital TOT17 acute lymphoblastic leukemia and AML16 acute myeloid leukemia clinical trials. The Division holds three Endowed research chairs for both oncology and hematology research. Children s Hospital of Michigan is ranked among the Best Children s Hospitals by the U.S. News and World Report 2019-2020.
Candidate Requirements

- MD or DO required

- Board certification or eligibility with the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Hematology Oncology

- Michigan licensed or eligible to obtain licensure in the State of Michigan

- Must be a team player and have an interest in teaching and academics
