Division of Geriatric Medicine

Led by Dr. Peter Boling, the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University supports a large health system that cares for many adult patients with advanced chronic illness. The Division is seeking a new clinician educator, at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The VCUHS Center for Advanced Health Management, is a multi-faceted care system including: office-based medical care for those who are comparatively mobile; home-based care both short-term and long-term for those that are immobile; nursing home care; inpatient consult service; behavioral health counseling; pharmacy consultation; (eventually) fully developed telemedicine services (triage, counseling, monitoring, video-visits); and care management, and social work services. Patients will receive primary care if they need or want a new medical home and consultative care if their medical home is strong but needs augmentation with geriatric consultation, home care, telemedicine or other consultative service. Existing staff is comprised of 11 physicians, 18 NPs, 5 social workers, and 1 Pharm D. Learners include students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, residents, and geriatric fellows.

- Provide house calls and home-based care
- To support the research mission of the Division
- To teach fellows, residents, medical students
- Managing a panel of patients throughout the continuum of care, favoring value over volume
- Participate in weekend rotations on the inpatient Geriatric Medicine consult service, clinic-based care, nursing home care and hospice

- BC/BE in Geriatric Medicine
- Excellent clinical and teaching skills, and dedication to advancing the academic program
- Must be comfortable working with an interdisciplinary team including nurse practitioners, social workers, and pharmacists
- Candidates must also possess/maintain a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Virginia
- Must have direct experience managing complex inpatient and outpatient geriatric patients with a solid understanding of the geriatrician role and function
