Job Description

The Womens Health Clinic at the Portland VA Medical Center section of Primary Care Service, situated in Portland, OR, is seeking a dynamic board certified or board eligible physician for the position of Primary Care Womens Health. The patient population ranges from adult to geriatrics. The Incumbent will demonstrate proficiency in practice, planning, and self-direction in goal setting for managing each Veterans medical need. Candidates should be board-certified in Family Practice or Internal Medicine, with experience in womens health care.
The Womens health clinic physician will have the opportunity to supervise residents and medical students within the clinic. You will also have the opportunity to perform Womens Health procedures such as IUD insertions/removals, colposcopy and implantable contraceptives. You will be working with a full complement of support staff including an RN, LPN and medical support assistant as part of your Patient Aligned Care Team. You will have telephone call duties within the Division of Primary care encompassing 3-4 weeks per year.
Duties: Perform and record history and physical exams and record data from clinic visits. Evaluate, consult, and develop diagnoses and manage the primary care panel of patients assigned. Determine medical assessment and develop treatment plans according to accepted protocols. Enter progress notes in computerized medical record and complete workload documentation in a timely manner. Provide medical care encompassing acute and chronic medical conditions, gender specific primary care (initial evaluation and treatment of gender specific conditions such as pelvic and abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, vaginal infections, urinary incontinence, contraception, STI management, and menopause related concerns) and preventative care. Comply with nation and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and complete of clinical reminders for all patients. Orders diagnostic tests, medications and laboratory tests, as medically relevant for each patient. Provide timely follow-up on results, including completion of view alerts. Responsible for all pap cytology and mammography follow up for the assigned panel. Prescribe medications according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law. Educate patients concerning medical conditions and recommended treatments. (Specific topics include but are not limited to diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal disorders, transgender issues, contraception, reproductive and sexual health, preconception counseling, PTSD, Sexual trauma, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation, periodic immunization, health screening tests and other preventative health measures). Consult other specialties as appropriate, according to service agreements. She/he must display an exceptional degree of competence in providing healthcare to women veterans. The preferred candidate will be board certified or in the process of becoming certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
