Are you looking to use your skills as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join a strong Cardiothoracic team in Kalamazoo?

Borgess Health, part of Ascension Health is currently recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider to join the Borgess Heart Institute Cardiothoracic team. This position will provide specialty medical care in cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery.

In this position you can expect to:

In operating room and clinic:
Provide preoperative preparation, operative assistance and postoperative clinical management services on cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery patients in collaboration with other team members in a clinic, operating room, and intensive care units. Provide services by collecting data required for diagnosis and performing procedures and services.
Participates as first assistant in the operating room for all cardiac, thoracic and vascular cases. Exhibit surgical assisting skills, i.e. suturing, tying, instrument usage.
In emergency situations, stabilize, provides direct patient care, assesses and administers lifesaving procedures and medications pending availability of physician. Procedures include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, treatment of life endangering traumatic injuries, defibrillation, providing blocks, insertion of endotracheal tubes, insertion of chest tubes, insertion of central venous lines and administration of whole blood, oxygen, and other emergency medications.

In other areas:
Rounds with physician to discuss/problem solve patient progress according to clinical pathway.
Obtain and evaluate medical histories, performs physical examinations, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and orders laboratory studies, radiographs, electrocardiograms, and other special examinations.
Analyze and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and establishes plans for solutions to clinical problems.
Counsels patients on medical problems, use of drugs, expected effects of treatment, family planning, child care, diet, and other therapeutic health maintenance matters.
Perform complete preoperative evaluations including collecting specimens for pathologic examination, assessment/interpretation of lab work and other studies, writing clear and thorough preoperative/ daily/ post-operative orders, completing histories and physicals, and discussing concerns with patient/family members.
Makes entries in patient's permanent medical records.
Coordinates patient care with other members of health care team. Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management. Accomplishes narrative summaries and other documentation.
Instructs other members of the health care team on preventive medicine programs and other appropriate medical activities and functions, or as directed by a physician.
Attend hospital and nursing committee meetings and in-services relating to cardiac, thoracic and vascular services.
Provide daily formal and informal education to staff and patients/families as needs are identified.
Perform and/or coordinate discharge planning including writing prescriptions, filling out individual medication sheets, arranging Home Health care, cardiac rehab and other services as indicated by patient needs, and discussing short term plans daily with patient and family members.
Expected to take call


Qualifications:
Be a graduate Physician Assistant or certified Nurse Practitioner qualified by academic and practical education to provide patient services as a physician extender under supervision of a physician.
Be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Training Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or its predecessors, and acceptable to the Surgeon General, USAF, is mandatory.

Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Committee on Certification Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required.

Knowledge is mandatory of: anatomy; physiology; emergency medical treatment; surgical techniques; sterilization and aseptic techniques; medical ethics; administration of drugs; operation of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment; medical terminology; and specialized medical treatments and procedures, such as endoscopic vein harvesting.

Maintain currency and certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).


Skills:
Qualified Candidates can expect to have the capabilities to recognize more complicated cases, initiate treatment (if appropriate), and refer to a higher level of medical expertise for diagnosis and/or treatment in the following areas:

Professional Experience and Certification:

Have at least 24 months of experience within the last 36 months as a surgical physician assistant, 12 months of which much be in cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Surgical Assist Certification from CAAHEP-accredited programs.

KALAMAZOO
