JOB SUMMARY:

To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the physician, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to expand his/her services through the effective use of the physician assistant's knowledge in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis and to plan therapy. May assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the physician.



A major role will be as patient advocate in the medical care system serving as confidant, advisor, and liaison between the patient and the physician.



Works under the responsibility and supervision of the physician.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1.To assist the physician in the care and evaluation of patients, the PA in Family Practice, in concert with the supervising physician, will:



a. Performs all aspects of primary care. Establishes a presumptive diagnosis, performs the general workup of the patient and is responsible under the physician's supervision for the management of the patient's problems following diagnosis.



b. Makes complete entries in the medical record, write orders and record progress notes. The order will be reviewed and countersigned by the supervising physician or his designated alternate within 24-48 hours.



c. Initiates appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and special examination or tests required for the evaluation of complaints.



d. Communicates with patients by phone and/or written letter regarding their problems, test results or other medical issues.



e. Provides counseling and instruction to patients regarding the patient's health-related problems.



f. Maintains CPR certification.



g. Prescribes medications or relay telephone orders for institution or renewal of medications and treatments that may be accepted by a registered nurse and/or registered pharmacist in accordance with Title 49 of the Pennsylvania Code, Professional and Vocational Standards for Physician Assistants.



h. Performs minor surgery as directed by the supervising physician.



i. Manages medical emergencies and initiates appropriate therapy until the arrival of a

physician.



j. Provides follow-up in health maintenance care including appropriate adjustments of

medications to patients in accordance with established protocols or specific instructions

from the supervising physician.



k. Assists in the training of health personnel as directed by the supervising physician.



l. Participates in appropriate internal continuing medical education programs.



m. Performs clinical procedures under the direction and/or supervision of the supervising physician. Procedures which are permitted must be noted in the individual job description and approved by the supervising physician, the department director, and the Joint Hospital Practice Committee.



n. Responsible for meeting CME requirements as specified by the NCCPA.



o. Performs patient teaching as needed.



p. Reports to the supervising physician any circumstances or approaches to medical management that, in the mind of the PA, present a significant threat to the patient's health or well-being.



*2.As indicated by his/her training and experience, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as directed by the supervising physician or designated alternate including, but not limited to, the following:



a. Wound care and dressings.



b. Performs minor surgical procedures to include removal of foreign bodies, repair lacerations, surgical biopsies, and removal of skin lesions.



c. Venipuncture.



d. Bladder catheterization.



e. CPR.



f. Records and interprets ECGs.



g. Performs Pap smears.



h. Performs audiologic, pulmonary function and visual acuity screenings.



i. Performs tonometry.



j. Performs I D of small abscesses.



k. Starts IVs.



l. Ear lavage.



3.Other duties:



*a. Conveys to patients and family in language they can understand summaries of all pertinent medical findings and offer appropriate advice.



b. Prepares and presents academic lectures on topics of individual expertise as agreed upon by the department director.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

Must obtain and maintain BLS,

Demonstrates computer literacy, accurate and timely charting via Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and require completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification or eligibility and Pennsylvania State licensure.
