Demographic Attributes of Urology Residents

Only 5.5% of practicing urologists in 2006 were female.1 In that same year, however, 21.4% of urology residents were female, as the chart below shows.2

Age Group Distribution

The average age of a urologist in the United States in 2003 was 53.7. This is significantly higher than the average age in 1992, 49.4.3 Currently, the majority of urologists are between the ages of 35 and 64. 10.5% are under the age of 35 and 16.7% are 65 years or older, as the table below details.1 The full distribution breakdown appears below:

According to a 2007 report, the average salary of a urologist in 2006-7 was $400,000. In 2005-6, the average salary was $320,000. This represents a 25% increase, and the highest salary gain across all physician specialties in the last two years. The full breakdown is below:
