In 2006, the majority of emergency medicine physicians were male, approximately 77%. The number of females practicing emergency medicine that same year was only approximately 22%. Despite the fact that the majority of emergency physicians are male, the percentage of women in this specialty has increased steadily (up by 231.9%) in the last two decades.2
